WHY DOES CRIME INCREASE AROUND THE HOLIDAYS?
For many the holidays are not a very happy time of year. Money and stress often creates pressures which often lead to crimes. It is also the time of year that I see the most egregious abuses of government charging. Needless to say this is the perfect recipe for misunderstandings to occur and people end up coming in contact with the justice system unnecessarily.
Gift giving, holiday parties, and family time are all pressures that increase the likelihood of crime occurring. When we gift give, we often spend time away from our residence and this presents an opportunity for increase theft from those that are less fortunate who are trying to provide for themselves. In addition, holiday parties often accompany drinking, and often you have to drive to get to the party. Many people only drink to fit in socially and so they are not aware of the possible consequences of driving home after they had been drinking. In addition, family from out of town, or other loved ones may have conflict with one another and that escalates into a situation where law enforcement is called. This all coupled with an sense of socially emotional pressure to feel happy causes many people to feel alone, afraid, and sometimes in pain around the holidays.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE BEEN ACCUSED OF A CRIME DURING THE HOLIDAYS?
The first thing you should do is STOP TALKING! If you are a suspect in a crime, stop talking and obtain legal representation. I cannot stress how important this is! If the police are questioning you assume your a suspect and don't try to explain the situation. There is no point explaining to someone who can use everything you say against you later. Its just more ammunition to use against you later.
The second thing you should do is find legal representation. Do yourself a favor and get a consult with an experienced and local Criminal Defense Lawyer. I would be glad to help you navigate this difficult and confusing time and help ease the stress you may be feeling around the holidays.
